How it works
steps = round(total rise ÷ target riser); run = steps × tread; stringers from width
- Steps = round(30 in ÷ 7.5 in) = 4
- Actual riser = 30 ÷ 4 = 7.5 in (code max usually 7.75 in)
- Total run = 4 × 10.5 in = 42 in = 3.5 ft
- Stringers for 4 ft width ≈ 4 (max ~16–18 in apart)
- Stringer length ≈ √((2.5 ft)² + (3.5 ft)²) = 4.3 ft
How the deck stair calculator works
The total rise — finished deck surface to the lower landing — drives everything. Divide it by a comfortable riser height (7.5 inches is the classic target) and round to whole steps.
Rounding changes the actual riser: a 30 inch rise split into 4 steps gives exactly 7.5 inches, but 27 inches into 4 steps gives 6.75. The calculator always reports the true number so you can check it against code.
Stringers are the saw-cut boards the treads sit on. Space them no more than 16–18 inches apart, so a typical 36–48 inch wide stair needs three; wide or heavy-use stairs need four.

Worked example: 30 inch rise to the deck
- Total rise = 30 inches, target riser = 7.5 inches
- Steps = round(30 ÷ 7.5) = 4 risers
- Actual riser = 30 ÷ 4 = 7.5 inches (within the usual 7.75" max)
- Total run = 4 × 10.5 in = 42 inches = 3.5 ft horizontally
- Stringers for a 4 ft wide stair = 3 (max ~16 in apart)
- Stringer length ≈ √(2.5² + 3.5²) ≈ 4.3 ft
