How it works

boards = ceil( area ÷ coverage × (1 + waste) ); clips = rows × joists-per-row

Area = 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft
Coverage per 16 ft board = (5.5 + 0.125) × 16 ÷ 12 = 7.5 sq ft
Boards with 10% waste = ceil(25.6 × 1.1) = 29
Rows across width = ceil(144 ÷ 5.625) = 26
Joists per row = ceil(192 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13
Clips = 26 rows × 13 joists = 338, + waste → 372

How the composite decking calculator works

Composite decking installs with hidden clips that sit between boards and screw into the joists. You need one clip at every joist crossing, so the clip count depends on joist spacing as much as on deck area.

Wide boards (7.25") cover more area per board and need fewer clips overall, which is why they cost more per board but often similar per square foot.

Boards run in rows; each row crosses every joist. The calculator counts rows across the deck width and joists along the run, then multiplies.

Worked example: 12 × 16 ft composite deck

Area = 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft
Coverage per 16 ft composite board = (5.5 + 0.125) × 16 ÷ 12 = 7.5 sq ft
Boards = ceil(192 ÷ 7.5 × 1.10) = 29 boards
Rows across 16 ft = ceil(192 ÷ 5.625) = 35 rows
Joists per row at 16" o.c. over 12 ft = ceil(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 10
Clips = 35 × 10 = 350, + 10% = 385 clips

Frequently asked questions

How many composite boards do I need for a 12×12 deck?

A 12×12 deck is 144 sq ft. With 5.5" wide boards 16 ft long (7.33 sq ft coverage each) you need about 20 boards before waste, or 22 with a 10% waste allowance.

How many hidden fastener clips do I need?

One clip per joist crossing. At 16" on center, a typical 200 sq ft deck needs roughly 350–450 clips depending on board direction. The calculator returns an exact count from your joist spacing.

Can I install composite boards over an existing wood frame?

Yes, if the joists are sound and spaced no wider than 16" on center. Check for rot, sagging or joists spaced 24" apart — composite is stiffer than wood decking and needs tighter support.

Is composite worth the higher price than pressure-treated wood?
